Get Rid of Bats

Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight and have been part of folklore and popular culture for their odd habits, unique appearance, nocturnal activity, and the unsettling tendency some species have to drink the blood of other animals. These “vampire bats” only include three species out of the over 1,000 varieties in the world. While you may not have a high chance of having your blood sucked by one of these flying creatures, they can pose other problems.

Bats form large colonies, and if they nest in an attic or similar space, their droppings can be a breeding ground for diseases and fungal spores. Bats are commonly found in barns, woodsheds, and hollow trees. For the most part, they eat insects, fruits, and plant nectars. Most are insectivores, so they play a large part in natural pest control.

Although it’s quite common for people and bats to live in harmony, they can sometimes pose a serious health risk and should be approached with care. Bats should never be grabbed or handled by untrained individuals, and any bat colonies that take up residence in your home need to be addressed quickly.

Bat colonies can number in the millions. It may not be possible for that many bats to set up shop in your house, and they reproduce rather slowly, but they can form family groups quickly. A small family of bats in your attic can rapidly grow to hundreds.

Bats are fascinating creatures that pose little danger to humans, but they must be approached with caution. Having them nearby to keep the local insect population in check can be accomplished with bat boxes on your property that give them a cozy place to live without putting you and your family’s health at risk.
