Opossum Control

Opossums are the only marsupial indigenous to the United States, and they’re commonly seen in urban and densely-populated areas. They’re nocturnal, omnivorous, and well-known for “playing dead” as a defensive tactic to appear less desirable to predators or other threats. They can grow to about the size of a house cat and may become aggressive when cornered or threatened.

Opossums aren’t usually inclined to invade homes, but they do occasionally wander into residences in search of warmth, shelter, or food. They’re more likely to be found in garages, sheds, firewood stacks, and under porches or stairwells. They’re typically found in warm to moderate climates and don’t handle low temperatures well. When warmth isn’t available in their natural habitats (or if they become stranded or lost), they may invade a dwelling to take shelter.

It’s best to prevent the likelihood of an opossum issue by bringing any outdoor pet dishes inside and sealing up any access points they may use to get into your home or business. You can also seal off entrance ways to the spaces under your porch or outdoor stairwells and trim any overgrown vegetation to further limit their choices for potential hiding places. Sealing garbage cans will also prevent them from rifling through trash in search of food.

It’s important to seek professional assistance when dealing with an opossum problem. They can carry diseases like tuberculosis and parasites such as lice and fleas. Opossums have remarkably sharp teeth and claws and can bite or scratch humans that attempt to handle or remove them.

Critter Control®’s certified wildlife control experts have extensive experience with all types of animal control issues and can provide safe, effective, and humane opossum removal and relocation.
